13 billion plastic bags are used in the UK every year, and Newport is the first Welsh city to make a stand. In a small marquee this week the Vity Council conveyed a big message – plastic bags are used for minutes, but last 1,000 years. By handing out bags for life, the city’s Pride in Newport teams highlighted the environmental alternatives available to shoppers. A similar event held in Newport Market during the run up to Christmas was also widely supported by traders and customers alike.Working towards reducing the amount of plastic bags being used in the city is an ambitious project that will further extend the city’s green credentials.Identified as the UK’s greenest city by an independent WWF report in 2007, the council has a long established reputation for being a forerunner in reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.Councillor Ray Truman, cabinet member for community safety and sustainability said: “Pride in Newport has one key message – people can change things. They can make their environment and their community better. All we are doing is highlighting a small change of habit, but one that could have a global impact”.
