City regeneration company Newport Unlimited has issued a detailed summary of progress on the main projects under way or planned for Newport over the next three years. The spring promises to be a busy period with work commencing on the Friars Walk and City Spires developments as well as work near the railway station to improve pedestrian and bus facilities. The University Campus also gets under way during this period.The Kingsway Car Park, key to improving accessibility to the City's new retail provision is due for completion by September 2008. The project plan includes reference to the Crindau gateway including new Sainsburys store with work expected to start later this year
ROYAL GWENT A AND E IMPROVEMENT
The Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport is near to meeting stringent targets for emergency treatment set by the National Assembly for Wales. Over 90 per cent of patients requiring accident and emergency treatment are now treated within four hours (the target is 95 per cent). In December the Hospital dealt with 10,733 patients requiring emergency treatment, the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff saw fewer patients (10,135) and achieved a success rate of 83 per cent.
DUFFRYN THREATS - POLICE MAKE ONE ARREST
Armed officers have made one arrest as Gwent Police investigated allegations of threats against people in the Duffryn area of Newport. Police said the armed officers were supporting local officers when they visited an address on Saturday. No arrests were made there, but they later detained a suspect.
LLISWERRY ATTACK - FOUR ARRESTED
Four youths have been arrested following a seemingly unprovoked attack in the Lliswerry area of Newport. A 16 year old was attacked and assaulted by a group of youths while a larger group watched on last Saturday (19th). The incident it seems was captured by closed circuit television at a house near to the incident. As a result police carried out a series of raids in the Ringland and Beechwood areas.
