CHRISTCHURCH ROAD POST OFFICE SAVED

Following a determined campaign by local residents and politicians Christchurch Road Post Office has been saved from closure - more details to follow.

WORK STARTS ON MASSIVE RECYCLING PLANT

Construction has begun on a huge new waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) plant which developers say will be one of the biggest of its kind in the world. Located in the Newport docks area the massive recycling site will take up 12 acres of land and will process up to 100,000 tonnes of WEEE annually. The site is being built by metal recycling firm Sims Group which the website says is investing £11 million into the project. Priorities of the plant, which is set to open within the next nine months, will be the dismantlement of cathode ray tubes (CRT) and TV monitors

CONTRACTS SIGNED FOR NEW PRIMARY

The contracts for the new Glan Usk primary school have been signed between developers Vinci Investments Ltd and Newport City Council.The new school, which will be built at Glebelands, will replace Durham Road Infants and Junior Schools and Rockfield Nursery. Vinci Investments Ltd is building the school for the council under the government’s private finance initiative (PFI) and plans have already been approved. The cabinet member for young people’s services, councillor Bob Poole, said: “This is fantastic news. The Assembly has given the green-light to the business case and I am delighted that work can start on site in April. “An incredible amount of hard work has gone into getting the project this far and the signing up the contracts means we have cleared the project’s last hurdle.“We can now look forward to this state-of-the art facility opening to pupils in January 2010.”

START OF FRIAR'S WALK MALL IMMINENT

The final stages of planning for the new Friar's Walk shopping centre are under way. On March 26 City planners will consider slight revisions to the shopping centre and associated buildings. The residential tower will now be at least twenty storeys high. Provision within the mall has been made for an additional A3 unit to cater for the high demand in the development for food and drink establishments.
